Prophet Nuh -Part 2

Read the first part.

Prophet Nuh Story

Prophet Nuh was born in Mosul, Iraq. (According to some Islamic research). He was born sometime in about 3900 BC.

According to Islamic Hadith:

Nuh (AS) lived 10 centuries after Prophet Adam (AS). (According to Ibn Abbas, companion of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)).

Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The period between Adam and Noah was ten centuries.” (Sahih Bukhari, Noah was born 1056 years after Adam’s creation (or after he left the Garden of Eden).

Nuh (AS) was the first of the Ulul Azam’ prophets. The first prophet brought law to Humanity. He was a carpenter by profession.

Wadan was a righteous man who lived near Babylon. After he died people became very sad, that he passed away.

The Devil came to the people disguised as a man. Since he is a jinn, he can shapeshift. It is not just in Islam but in other cultures and they are given different names. Prior to Islam, people did not have enough information about:

·         Ghosts(Bhoot)

·         Fairy(Pari)

·         Maruts-Indian Culture.  Islam gave a clarification on Jinns. This is a vast topic by itself so we will not speak here.

He convinced people to erect a statue of men who died and worship him to get various benefits. Ultimately people were creating and worshipping idols. Idols were basically well-known righteous people of the area.

The main idols were called:

·         Waddan

·         Suwa

·         Yaguth

·         Nasr

The Quran says:

“Before them, the people of Noah denied the truth and rejected Our servant, calling him insane. And he was intimidated.”

The Almighty has sent roughly 124,000 prophets (according to hadith) throughout the world but only 25 are mentioned in the Quran. The prophets mainly mentioned are of Bani Israel (Children of Israel) and other Arab prophets.

The Quran mentions this:

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid āghūt."1 And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers. (Sura Nahl, Holy Quran. 16:36)

Nuh (AS) was a carpenter by profession.  Nuh (AS) preached to his people by giving many examples and his people listened.

The Quran mentions as follows:

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people. He said, “O my people! Worship Allah—you have no other god except Him. I truly fear for you the torment of a tremendous Day.”

                     -Al Quran (7:59)

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], “Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment.”

                    -Al Quran (71:1)

The main message that Nuh (AS) gave was to worship the Almighty Alone.   His people were worshipping idols and statues.

The people of people rejected his message and did not want to hear it because he was not elite, wealthy or be somebody to be heard. Even today it does not suffice to be a good, honest person so that your message is heard by the common people. You have to be PHD, or some labels have to be attached so people will know your message,

The Message of the Almighty was free and you don’t have to pay. It was for everybody. There was a time when access to religious scriptures or religion was limited to some classes or people. This was because so the ruling class, the wealthy could make benefit. In Islam, there is no such thing is reserved for the elite or you got VIP status. The status in Islam is due to your deeds, piety, and good works.

For example when Salman Al Farsi, A Persian Muslim, a companion of the prophet gave a war strategy to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). At that time, nobody knew him well.  Salman's (RA) own story of conversion is rather unique and interesting. The point is in a great important meeting, common participants can rarely talk. This was the teaching of Islam, to give credit to Merit, and good deeds rather than labels of rich, senior, aristocracy, and race.

The people of Nuh(AS)  reply was, mentioned in Quran:

The disbelieving chiefs of his people said, “We see you only as a human being like ourselves, and we see that no one follows you except the lowliest among us, who do so ˹hastily˺ without thinking.1 We do not see anything that makes all of you any better than us. In fact, we think you are liars.”

                 (Al Quran 11:27)

They answered: "Shall we accept you even though it is the meanest of people who follow you?

                (Al Quran 26:111)

In reference to Khurshid Imam’s blog:

The word used for lowest is “ardhalūna” and “arādhilunā   is used for the lowest or meanest and comes from the Arabic word radhalam. These words were not used in the Quran for any other community. Readers might get a clue where we are leading up to. Yes to show similarities bet Prophet Nuh (AS) and Manu. I don’t know the Unseen.

The word dalit is used in the Hindu Caste system for people who are so low they are not placed in the Hindu caste System.

In India, even Muslims think of dalits with contempt and disgust. This is not the view Of Islam. They are good but we can't sit or eat with them.

This hierarchy in the caste system has given hierarchy. It is ingrained in us through our ancestors. For Example Muslims from the Indian sub-continent:

Can they sit to dine with their servants? Or do servants sit with them and in their Western dining system?

The answer is most of them would not. It is unthinkable with Muslims from the Indian Subcontinent!

What does Islam say about this concept of treating servants, Dalits?

“O mankind, verily We have created you from a single (Pair) of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other. Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Almighty Allah is the most righteous”

There is no caste system, nor some humans being unequal (Assume all are Muslims).  So we Desi Muslims should be able to dine with our servants. What is holding us back is 5000+ years of indoctrination. It is like in our DNA (not literally).

In Saudi this video illustrates the point

Nuh(AS) explained he was human like them and if the city was full of angels, angels would be sent as prophets.

The people who followed Nuh (AS) eventually after 960 years of preaching were the poor, miserable, and downtrodden.

Nuh(AS) warns his people.

O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.” (Qur’an 7:59)

The reply his people gave to him:

“Indeed, we see you in clear error.” (Qur’an 7:60), they angrily mocked Nuh AS.

But Nuh(AS) answered them:

O my people, there is not error in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds. I convey to you the messages of my Lord and advise you; and I know from Allah what you do not know.” (Qur’an 71:61)

“Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed if you only knew.” (Qur’an 71:4)

This continued until the Prophet Nuh (As) was told that none would believe except the ones that have already believed. The number of believers would be 80 approximately excluding the Prophet’s Nuh (aS)’s Son and wife.

Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah at all, and it was said, “Enter the Fire with those who enter.” (Qur’an 66:10)

Even after Preaching for a long time, only a few became Muslims.

And We certainly sent Nuh to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers. (Qur’an 29:14)

Finally, The Almighty revealed

And it was revealed to Noah that, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing.(Al Quran: Surah Hud:36)
