Al Haramain Perfumes-story of a Bangladeshi who brought branding to Essential oils.

                             Al Haramain Perfumes

Al Harmain Perfumes is a well-known brand of perfumes and attar, in the Middle East. It started as a store in Makkah of Agarwood. The name is taken from the Holy Mosques of the Muslims in Saudia Arabia.

A group of companies whose owner comes from Bangladesh. The company’s current revenue is 35 million US Dollars per year.

The Founder of Al Haramain Kazi Abdul Haque believed that it ‘had the power to awaken desires, memories and bring serenity” and this belief is shared among his heirs.

Indica Collection shares the part of the vision of Al Haramain Perfumes. Our idea was to place all desi Muslim culture in one brand-Indica Collection.  We being brand ambassadors of Desi Muslim Culture and Heritage believe the best of this can be presented in a single brand: Indica Collection.

Our concept was if Attar could be branded and sold it would be more popular, Nobody advertises much about Attar’’ or Essential oils that much.

Attar’ is a scent that the hadith mentions about:

“The best scent is the perfume of musk.” (At-Tirmidhi).

The market of attar includes the Muslim world and beyond that is: 1.5 Billion ++ and if you consider Europe and North America, it will be more. For this proper branding is necessary and promotion. Attar ‘is seen as a Muslim or Arab thing. Come on it is an alcohol-free, natural scent that gives a pleasant aroma.

Well, this is another topic in itself.

The point is more Attar companies should come out from Bangladesh.

Mohammed Mahtabur Rahman, son of the founder had visited Taif and seen the distilleries there. A passion developed there where wanted to bring the best perfume /attar to the world.

He holds many positions also in Bangladesh. Amongst them are:

·        Chairman –NRB Bank.

·        Chairman --Hamidia Tea Co Ltd

·        Was ranked as CIP (Commercially Important Person) for three consecutive years.

A list of these positions can be seen on his website.

The point is youngsters from Bangladesh should be inspired to make new industries and businesses in the long run. The company expanded its operations to 100 countries. The headquarters is in Dubai gives them an edge. I think Al Haramain could use professional branding for the European and North American countries.

A popular brand is Amber Oud Gold Edition whose fragrance is flowery and oriental.

Al Haramain happens to be one of the largest manufacturing units of Perfume in the Middle East. The unit measures about 174, 477 Square feet and caters to a Middle Eastern and Muslim audience.

Some of the fragrances or attar:

·        Ajwa

·        Al Buraq

·        Al Khaleej

·        Amira Gold.

A list of the fragrances can be seen in this site.

Mr Mahtabur Rahman is credited for the success of the Al Haramain Perfumes and is also known for his philanthropic works. He donated $1 million US dollars to the Rohingya refugees.

The Ingredients in Al Haramain Perfume.

The ingredients apart from natural musk used are oud’ or agarwood. This is known as frankincense and the Nabaeteans (The Thamud of Arabia.) used to trade with the Greek Empire. There was a frankincense route which was the route through which frankincense was taken. The Thamud has left magnificent buildings made from mountains about 4000 years ago.

Anyway, that is another story and is related to the Quran.

The other ingredients include:

·        Rose-Bulgarian, Turkish, Bulgarian, etc.

·        Musk

·        Variety spices and herbs: saffron, ginger, cardamom, grapefruit, others, etc.

Al Haramain story inspires youngsters venturing into the Middle East for jobs. Just don’t focus on jobs, also focus also business.

Another young man from the Indian subcontinent who made it big in the Middle East is Mr. Yusif Ali, owner of Lulu Group based in UAE also. He came from India to Abu Dhabi in 1973.

In Yusuf Ali’s words:

Business is not just about money, product or services. It’s all about people.

Al Haramain’s founders come from Sylhet, a well-known district in Bangladesh. A lot of the residents have immigrated to the United Kingdom and made their mark in Indian cuisine’ (They call it and it is Bangladeshi in fact.).

Many restaurants in London are owned by Sylheti’s from Bangladesh. An example would be Tommy Miah. He also has made chotpoti famous in London. His restaurant is also known as Raj Restaurant in Edinburgh, UK. The British are fond of Indian (Bengali) cuisine, which might be because of their stay in India (as rulers) and the fact their capital was in Kolkata. (Capital of British India and Bengal).

The Indica Collection Summary:

Al Haramain might consider of rebranding its website as well of its products from a professional European company to venture into these markets.

The Bangladeshi government should encourage attar businessmen to grow in a professional manner.
